Art does not exist unless you identify it as such. And if we are not conscious of art and beauty, then art does not exist. So, what happens to an individual when he or she encounters art? At first glance, the pupils tend to dilate, the heartbeat initially quickens and then slow downs, the flow of blood initially speeds up, the limbic system--the oldest part of our brain--lights up under PET scans, activity in other areas of the brain tends to localize as our concentration increases. Neural activity increases in the right frontal lobes of the brain. We lose ourselves in the thought of the moment. Art is not a painting or a sculpture. It is a state of mind, a condition of being, a moment of consciousness, and a spike in the electricity of life. Art is a verb, not an adjective. It is a process during which time becomes irrelevant and there is significantly less perception of outside stimuli. We become focused on other things and often forget about ourselves. Life is more interesting with art in it. The pursuit of beauty allows us to enjoy ourselves. Our constant need for approval from others diminishes when we find passion in our pursuits. Internal motivation is far more rewarding and relevant than external rewards. Art, trite as it sounds, is a gift from the gods. It is the constant enduring pursuit for quality, excellence , and perfection in any endeavor. It is the only reason for living.
